Travel Tip: Getting to a U.S. Embassy Overseas

embassyFor most of us a trip overseas is fun, inspiring, and usually includes once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

But what happens if you get into trouble overseas?

You might lose your money, you could get involved in an accident, or you might get sick or even arrested.

While the U.S. Embassy officially represents you as citizens around the world, it can’t act as your attorney.

Members of the U.S. Consulate can visit you in jail, but they can’t get you out of jail.

If you lose your money or credit cards, they won’t pay for a flight home.

But the embassy can act as a conduit to get you an attorney and help get you money from friends and relatives.

However, in the event of a major political or military conflict overseas—or if an emergency evacuation is ordered—the U.S. government may fly you out.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll fly you home.

In fact, they’ll fly you to the nearest safe place, then you’ll need to find your way home.
