It’s not just about travel. It’s about quality of life for many Americans, and one of their last big trips is also one of their most important—traveling to a new location for the express purpose of retirement.

The website WalletHub analyzed all 50 states across 24 key measurements.

These ranged from the obvious—cost of living and medical care—to crime rates and the number of employed residents over the age of 65.

So what were the best states in which to retire? Florida…followed by Wyoming, South Dakota, and South Carolina.

The worst states? Hawaii, where the adjusted cost of living is highest.

Not surprisingly, the state with the largest population of 65-plus residents is Florida.

The lowest is Alaska.

Here’s another consideration: the annual cost of in-home services. North Dakota is the most expensive, which is two times greater than Louisiana.

Are you thinking of retiring in Washington, D.C.? Property crime rate is the highest in the nation’s capital.

The lowest crime rate? Vermont.
