Travel Tip: How to Make Your Stay at a Hotel More Eco-Friendly

hotel2What do we look for in a supposedly green hotel?

You know what they say, the ones that recycle or save energy or don’t wash their towels everyday.

That’s all well and good. But it’s what you do as a guest when you stay there that can make a real difference.

So when you check into your room, unplug the appliances like the coffee maker or the hair dyer.

They drain energy even when they aren’t on.

Then adjust the thermostat.

Raising or lowering the temperature just a couple of degrees can have a significant energy impact.

And here’s one most of us tend to forget: How about taking shorter showers?

The average U.S. shower head releases 2.5 gallons a minute.

If you take a 10 minute shower, that’s the equivalent of giving an elephant its daily fill of water.

If you’re staying at a hotel for more than one night, then opt of of housekeeping.

The water savings alone by not cleaning linens and towels for one day are substantial.
