Lauderdale, Florida. Seatrade Cruise Global is the leading international exhibition and conference for cruise industry professionals, and this year, the convention moved to Ft. Lauderdale after 27 years in Miami. Arnold Donald, President and CEO of Carnival Corporation, joins us to talk about the growth of the cruise ship industry, and the Carnival approach to all-inclusive cruising. Marjie Lambert, Travel Editor for The Miami Herald, drops by to share some of her favorite cruise destinations, and USA Today Cruise Log Blogger Gene Sloane talks about the rise of female captains in the cruise industry, the rise of cruising in China, and China’s desire to have a cruise economy. Julia Brown, Chief Procurement Officer for Carnival Corporation, explains what it’s like to be responsible for purchasing all of the items necessary to keep cruise ships running. Tara Russell, President of Fathom & Global Impact Lead of Carnival Corporation, talks about the Fathom brand, cruises designed for mindful families, purpose-driven millennials, and seasoned cruisers looking for an opportunity for cultural immersion and social impact. She discusses the partnership in the northern Dominican Republic, and the systematic long-term plan to positively impact the community. Angus Struthers, Vice President of Marketing for Cunard, discusses the Queen Mary 2, the only ship currently making transatlantic crossings. He talks about the heritage of the Queen Mary 2 as a classic and more formal cruise line, but one that is pet friendly with amenities like on-board kennels and dog walkers for our four-legged friends (and fire hydrants for American dogs, and lampposts for European dogs).

Josh Leibowitz, Chief Strategy Officer for Carnival Corporation, talks about Carnival’s efforts to get people to actually think about taking a cruise, and some of the innovations—such as “Battle Chefs”—that Carnival is employing to make the cruise experience unique and entertaining.

Gene Sloan, USA Today Cruise Log Blogger, discusses the boom in cruising and the rising demand for capacity in both the United States and overseas. He talks about China wanting to be a major player in the cruise industry and its interest in having a thriving cruise economy. He also talks about the rise of female captains and the long overdue promotions of women in what have been traditionally male-dominated positions.

Anne Kalosh, U.S. Editor for Seatrade Cruise News, talks about the number of new ships that are being built, and the work to refurbish older ships rather than retire them, in an effort to compete with newer ships—with updated dining and entertainment options.
