Travel Tip: Decoding the Letters on Your Boarding Pass

photo1Most of you know that when you see the letter F on your boarding pass it means first class and that Y means economy.

But do you have any idea what Q, L, X, or Z mean?

You’ll find them listed on your ticket every time you book online. But most of you don’t have a clue what they mean.

But what you don’t know could hurt you.

Those letters often refer to whether the ticket is refundable or not…or whether your ticket is upgradeable or not.

It can also mean how many days in advance you need to book the fare, or whether it requires a Saturday night stay.

So this isn’t about class distinction, but fare classes. These letters are booking codes.

Since different airlines choose different letters for these codes, you may not know what they mean.

Before you hit that key stroke and buy that fare, call the airline and give them that booking code—and then determine the real flexibility of your ticket.

That letter or booking code will tell you right away if you’re making the right choice.

It could save you a lot more money in the long run.
