Argentina

The same is true in Argentina. The new president just released currency controls, and as a result, the peso went from about 8 to 15 against the dollar. Total bargain. Even though Christmas was just last week, do what I do every year—go to Argentina and do your Christmas shopping for 2016 now.

You’ll find amazing prices—not just for goods, but for experiences like tango at night in the neighborhood milongas. One word of advice and one of caution: Don’t go to the touristy tango shows. Go to the neighborhood milongas where true tango aficionados go. They usually start arriving at 10 p.m. But one word of caution: Watch, don’t participate. These people take their tango seriously.

In Buenos Aires, head for the weekend market in San Telmo, where there are great bargains on antiques and just about everything else. Of course, if you like steak, you’ve come to the right place for the highest quality meat at rock bottom prices. At the restaurant La Brigada, which is close to San Telmo, the meat is so tender the waiters amuse themselves (and you) by coming to your table and carving your steak with a spoon.

The hippest neighborhood is Palermo, and it’s difficult to find a bad bottle of wine, especially if you order the Malbec from Mendoza. One word of advice: you’re staying up late because you’re eating late. If you show up at a restaurant at 8 p.m., you’ll be the only one there. I’m also in love with Freddo, the local ice cream stores, where I always order the dulce de leche.
