Travel Tip: What Could Change With Heightened Travel Security

Locations in this article:  Paris, France

airportWith the downing of the Russian airliner in Egypt and the terrorist attacks in Paris, be prepared for heightened travel security at airports and border crossings.

Some of it you’ll see, some of it will be hidden.

At some high-risk U.S. airports, you can expect TSA inspectors conducting more behavioral profiling—engaging you in conversations with questions that can’t be answered by a simple yes or no.

Instead of asking a passenger if he or she packed the bags themselves, the question might be “So, where are you going today?”

If you don’t know the answer to that question, you can count on a more intense conversation.

Checked baggage will also be under more scrutiny, so if you’re flying with wrapped presents, don’t be surprised if they are opened by TSA inspectors.

On a number of flights the DHS might deem high risk, positive bag matching is implemented more widely—that is, no one can check bags on a flight, not get on the flight, and have those bags fly.

As a result, you can expect some flight delays as these bags are removed before the plane pushes back from the gate.
