Travel Tip: Are Premium Economy Seats Worth the Price?

Just about every time you try to make a reservation for a coach or economy ticket, the airline is trying to step you up to a mid-level seat.

Some call it economy plus, others call main cabin extra or…premium economy.

This section offers somewhat wider seats, sometimes extra legroom, and some of the seats actually recline.

So, is this a good idea?

If you’re six foot four, you might not have a choice. It’s either premium economy or orthopedic surgery.

But for the rest of us, the tipping point is price.

Premium economy costs about 50 percent more than regular economy, but there’s another way to look at it—it’s 50 to 75 percent LESS than business class.

But you also need to consider this: Does it include a meal? No.

Extra baggage allowance? Nope.

Perhaps the best metric to determine if the upgrade is a smart move is the length of the flight and how much flying without your knees against your neck is worth to you…
