santa barbaraSanta Barbara, California is situated on a south-facing section of coastline—the longest section on the United States’ West Coast—tucked between the steep Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It’s a two-hour drive up the Pacific coast from Los Angeles, and offers both mountain and ocean recreational activities. The climate is great for growing wine grapes, as evidenced by the number of wineries (and varieties produced), and it’s often referred to as the “American Riviera” because of the Mediterranean climate. It’s home to more than 27 different types of whales and dolphins, and the Santa Barbara Channel is in the migratory route for gray whales, making this one of the best places for whale watching in the world.
