Travel Tip: How You Can Fight Human Trafficking While You Travel

thecodeMost people don’t know about this $32 billion crime industry, and yet it impacts as many as 21 million people worldwide.

I’m talking about human trafficking, or modern-day slavery.

Here in the U.S., a new law is designed to increase enforcement and resources for human trafficking victims, which is a step in the right direction.

But it’s critical that every traveler pay attention to the red flags.

Be aware of where you’re spending your money. Find out if your hotel chain has signed on to something called The Code, which pledges to protect people from being exploited.

If you’re on a plane or in an airport and you think you see a child who looks disoriented or doesn’t know where they’re going, alert someone.

If you’re traveling abroad, find out if there’s a hotline where you can report suspicious activity, and look into international programs like the Polaris Project and La Strada International that help combat human trafficking.
