In some countries, a train pass gets you more than just access to a few trains. It can actually connect you to multiple forms of transportation with one ticket.

The old Eurail pass is still around, but who has time to cover the entire continent in one trip? Instead, look for single-country and regional passes.

The Swiss Travel Pass starts at $223 and gets you free access on intercity trains, panoramic railways, public buses, boats, and discounts on scenic mountain trains.

In Japan, the JR Pass lets you travel the whole country on intercity trains, buses, ferries, and even the Tokyo Monorail.

You can upgrade to a Green Pass for reserved seats and free food and drinks, but the regular pass is a pretty good deal (starting at $241) for a week of travel.

But, believe it or not, we have rail passes right here in the U.S. Amtrak has passes for 15, 30, and 45 days starting at $459—not a bad deal when you consider the cost of a plane ticket.
