Travel Tip: New Cruise Ships Aim to be Bigger & Better

The Viking Star

These days, hearing that a cruise line has a new ship isn’t exactly a headline. But there are some new cruise ships with notable features.

Viking River Cruises is known for, well, river cruising. But it just launched its very first ocean cruise.

What’s cool about this ship, known as the Viking Star, is that the experience is similar to a river cruise. It’s small—only 930 passengers—and your fare includes shore excursions, alcohol with meals, and onboard lectures.

Coming this fall is the Norwegian Escape. This ship has the largest number of studio cabins in the fleet. Eighty-two cabins are designed for solo travelers, who also get access to their own private lounge.

Considering a few years ago there was hardly ever a solo cabin on a cruise ship, this is a big deal.

People have been waiting for Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas for a long time. Why? Because it has a whole lot of “firsts,” including the first sky-diving simulator at sea and the first capsule that gives you 360-degree views over the ocean.
