Here’s what is happening with Cuba travel.

It wasn’t that long ago that the Obama Administration announced it’s relaxing rules on travel from the U.S. to Cuba.  I’ve always said that the first ones to set up shop in Cuba will be cruise lines. They’re essentially floating hotels and they don’t require a lot of infrastructure on the ground.

Well, a Canadian company called Cuba Cruise is already there, sailing around the island under an official “people-to-people license.” Now, American citizens can legally book this cruise through U.S. travel agents or operators. We may soon see ferry services between the Florida Keys and Havana. A number of operators are applying for their licenses as we speak.

There’s also been a spike in chartered flights to Cuba. JetBlue is expanding its service, and several smaller companies are adding flights because of the increased demand.

But for the moment, your best bet is still to go with an approved, people-to-people tour: Insight Cuba, Smithsonian Journeys, and other organizations have been operating there for years and they know the lay of the land better than anyone.
