You’ve probably heard the government has relaxed the trade embargo to Cuba, but what exactly does that mean for you? Here’s what to expect in the coming months.

Right now, only a few tour operators like Insight Cuba and Distant Horizons have special licenses to bring tour groups to Cuba.

These tours fall under the categories of educational or cultural exchanges, and the itineraries are highly organized.

But the relaxed rules will most likely allow more operators to offer more categories for traveling to Cuba—like for sporting events or humanitarian work—without requiring special permission.

Now that still doesn’t mean you can fly to Cuba legally for a beach vacation, but that may be down the road.

The good news is that the relaxed restrictions mean you should be able to use American credit and debit cards in Cuba soon.

Now, if and when this does happen, here’s my advice. Go. Quickly. You want to get there before everyone else and before the fast-food chains move in.
