Travel Tip: New Year’s Resolutions for the Airline Industry

wingIt’s time for 2015 resolutions. No, I’m not talking about exercising more or eating less. I’ve got some resolutions for the airline industry.

Ask any airport authority how many airline takeoffs a runway can handle in any given hour and they’ll tell you 22.

So why do the airlines schedule as many as 34 takeoffs in an hour? Airports should publish runway limits and enforce them.

End de-icing delays. In winter, it’s not unusual to be delayed while the aircraft is de-iced.

But why are they de-icing at the gate? In some conditions—by the time the plane is back in line for takeoff—there is enough ice accumulation that it has to be de-iced all over again.

Airports should take over this service, construct de-icing stations near ends of runways, and everything will run much more smoothly.

Last but not least, there should be portable stairs. Consider this: You’re on a flight that’s actually on time, you land at your destination, and then you wait 45 minutes for an open jetway.

Just wheel up the portable stairs, and let us off the plane! Problem solved.
