After MH370, How Could AirAsia Flight QZ8501 Disappear?

On Sunday morning, an AirAsia A320-200 took off from Surabaya International Airport in Indonesia at 5:35 a.m. for Singapore. There were 155 passengers and seven crew members on board.

At 6:12 a.m., the pilot requested to change the plane’s altitude and flight path to avoid inclement weather and possible turbulence. A few minutes later, communication with Flight QZ8501 was lost, and the plane disappeared from air traffic control’s radar.

In the wake of MH370—a missing Malaysia Airlines flight that has still not been found—there are even more questions about how this type of incident could happen.
