Radio Guest List—Hilton Head, South Carolina—December 6, 2014

HiltonHeadThis week on the Peter Greenberg Worldwide Radio Show, Peter Greenberg heads to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Residents say there’s a renaissance happening, and from the sweet sounds of jazz in the downtown corridor to the shrimp boat feasts on the docks of the Calibouge Sound, Hilton Head doesn’t disappoint.

Joining Peter this week is Bob Masteller, owner of the Jazz Corner, which has an in-studio trumpet serenade, and Mayor John Lockhart talks about his commitment to the environment amidst the massive development of the island. Local author Olivia Stiffler shares her love of the island through her poetry. Peter also gets to taste Chef David Young’s homemade cornbread.

Joining us is lifelong Hilton Resident Emory Campbell, chair Emeritus of the Penn Center-principal of Gullah Heritage. Campbell was born and raised on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and was there when the island was connected to the mainland by a bridge. Campbell shares the history of the Gullah people who have preserved more of their African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other black community in the U.S.

All of this and more on this week’s broadcast of Peter Greenberg Worldwide from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Chef David Young, Executive Chef and Owner of Roastfish and Cornbread, is a native islander and his restaurant has become popular with both locals and visitors. It’s a very casual hole-in-the-wall spot, but the food is outstanding. Gullah favorites include crab soup, lowcountry boil, and great seafood with a twist. Chef Young also shares his secret cornbread recipe!
