Travel Tip: What You Need to Know When Traveling with a Cold

thesickpersonIt’s cold and flu season, so what does that mean for your travels?

No one likes being next to the sneezing, coughing guy on the plane. But it’s about your health as well.

When you’re congested, the change in altitude makes it difficult to equalize the pressure in your middle ear.

The pressure can actually push in your eardrums, which is not only painful, but can actually cause them to rupture.

High touch areas like elevator buttons, tray tables, and hotel remote controls are serious germ factories when you travel.

A case of the sniffles doesn’t mean you have to cancel your flight. But it does mean taking extra precautions.

Take a decongestant before flying. An hour before landing, use a pair of specialized ear plugs, called Ear Planes, that help regulate the pressure.

Carry alcohol-based sanitizer. Don’t be surprised if you see travelers wearing disposable face masks—it’s actually a great idea.

Now, I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. Consult your real physician about whether traveling with a cold is worth it or if you should postpone your trip.
