Radio Guest List—National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, UK—November 15, 2014

national museumThis week, Peter Greenberg goes back to Wales—which he’s done every year for the past six years! He returns to its capital, Cardiff—which is known for the Millennium Centre, the world’s oldest record store (Spillers 1894), and the National Museum, which is where we are broadcasting this Saturday, November 15.

Wales is one of those rare countries that makes Peter’s favorites list. Not only does it boast over 600 castles and contain an 870-mile coastal path, it remains one of the few places he sleeps well (must be all the gorgeous rolling hills and mountains). He interviews local historian and tour guide Mike Davis about those castles and other must-see locations. He also interviews Smarter Travel editor Anne Banas about the holiday travel season. Listen to those interviews and more as the show returns to Cardiff, UK and broadcasts from the National Museum of Wales.

Of course, Artes Mundi 6—the biennial has opened. The museum has also put back on display its collections from 1900-1960.

Carolyn Spencer Brown, Editor in Chief of Cruise Critic, chats with Peter about cruising during the holidays—and why you should go during that time—as well as her favorite cruise picks. She also speaks about her recent adventure on the Norwegian Breakaway during a hurricane.

Mike Davis, historian and owner of Dragon Tours, speaks to Peter about some of Wales’ lesser-known historical achievements and areas to visit if you want to surround yourself with history—not to mention one of the many hundreds (over 600) of castles. He also expounds on his book, The Last King of Wales, which tells the tell of an unknown Welsh King and the country’s history.

Ruth Cayford, Visual Arts Manager for Cardiff Council, explains her commitment to Cardiff Contemporary, an initiative and festival that works in partnership with Wales’ visual art, design, and architecture communities, aiming to establish an innovative progressive capital city in which visual arts can thrive. Ruth tells Peter where to visit local art and artists of all genres around the city.

Karen Mackinnon describes the Artes Mundi, a contemporary art organization based in Wales responsible for organizing the Artes Mundi Prize and the Artes Mundi Biennial. Since 2003, the Artes Mundi Biennial art prize has been held at the National Museum Cardiff.

Travel inspired the literature programs she started and their beloved Dylan Thomas, among many more contemporary works.
