How You Can Support Breast Cancer Awareness This Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), a month dedicated to fundraising and raising global awareness of the most common cancer in women. While many people know what breast cancer is, many forget about the steps they can take toward early detection—and how important it is to encourage others to do the same. Besides sporting pink ribbons like NFL players, you can visit events around the nation dedicated to the cause. Here are some BCAM events to check out:

stanton 2Keep Calm & Stanton On in South Beach

To celebrate BCAM, the Marriott Stanton in South Beach, Miami will be donating $10 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for every guest who walks into the hotel and books a room during the month of October. The hotel is also selling pink tshirts that say “Keep Calm and Stay at Stanton,” and the proceeds will go to the Foundation.

Drink a Pink Coconut Martini in Fort Lauderdale

If you’re ready for a cocktail after a long, hard day of sitting on the beach, the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is offering a Pink Coconut Martini. For every guest who orders the pink cocktail, the resort will donate $1 to support Breast Cancer Research.

Walk with the Avon Foundation for Women

Since 2005, the Avon Foundation for Women has hosted the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer and Walk for Breast Cancer events. Touring around the globe, the Avon Foundation has recruited more than two million people worldwide and raised more than $15 million for the cause. Throughout October, the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer is taking place in Serbia, Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Peru, Spain, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and Panama, among others. ritzPink Lights at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco

For the month of October, the exterior of the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco is lit up in pink. The hotel paired with the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund (BCEF), which supports low-income men and women battling breast cancer. On Saturday between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., The Lounge hosts a Pink Afternoon Tea, and the hotel will donate $10 for each patron. Additionally, $1 will be donated to BCEF for each “The Girls” cocktail sold, and guests will find pink amenities in their rooms.

Pink Ribbon Bagel at Panera Bread

If you happen to be in the Pittsburgh area this month, local Panera Bread bakeries have rolled out a unique awareness campaign. For the month of October, Pittsburgh locations will be donating proceeds from the sale of each Pink Ribbon Bagel to the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. Each bagel is twisted and baked into a ribbon shape and sold individually or as a baker’s dozen with two tubs of cream cheese. You can even pre-order them online

peggy drinkPeggy Drink at Eden Roc Miami Beach

This month, the Eden Roc hotel in Miami Beach will be featuring a pink, vodka-based “Peggy Drink” in honor of their Banquets Manager Peggy Sanabrai. Two years ago, Peggy was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after the birth of her second child. She is now in remission, and Eden Roc is honoring her with a concoction made with Grey Goose La Poire, simple syrup, lime juice, and homegrown mint. The Peggy Drink costs $12, and 20 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Miami chapter.

#PostPink at St. Kitts Marriott Resort

This resort in the tropical West Indies is pairing up with its own island’s Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation to raise awareness about breast cancer. Essence of Hope is the local organization and resource hub for the island’s cancer patients and survivors. For the month of October, guests are encouraged to post photos of themselves wearing pink on the hotel’s Facebook page. For each photo with the hashtag #PostPink, the resort will donate $1 to the organization.
