Salt & Straw, one of Portland’s leading ice cream purveyors, delivers adventurously flavored, hand-made ice cream using only the freshest ingredients.

Salt & Straw owes its creation to Kim Malek, who had dreamed of quitting her day job and opening an ice cream shop since 1996. She teamed with her cousin, Tyler Malek, a budding culinary artist, to create ice cream recipes that reflected their “farm to cone” philosophy.

They use all-natural cream from the Williamette Valley, as well as local, sustainable, organic ingredients. To create new concoctions, they use hand-picked, imported flavors from small farms around the world.

Since first opening in August 2011, they have gone from selling their unique creations in a tiny push cart in a Northeast Portland courtyard to the three shops they have in Portland today.

With each season, new flavors are introduced. Since it’s berry season, right now you can try flavors like Strawberry with Cilantro Lime Cheesecake, Black Raspberries with Smoked Ham, and Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero.
