If you’re contemplating an island vacation, you don’t necessarily have to think Hawaii or the Caribbean. Some of the best island experiences are right here and they’re easy drives or short boat rides from the coast of the continental U.S.
Often these islands are only accessible by boat, ferries, or sometimes private planes. But it’s worth the effort to get there, because there are undisturbed beaches, national parks and, one-of-a-kind nature experiences (hello, wild buffalo). The best part is that you don’t even need to own a private home to access these secret islands. There are plenty of affordable options, including B&Bs, family-friendly vacation rentals, and even a Holiday Inn or two.
