Travel Tip: Bitcoin and Travel

Locations in this article:  Las Vegas, NV

Bitcoin (2)Ladies and gentlemen, the future is here. We’re talking about a new type of currency called Bitcoin. Here’s the short explanation: Bitcoin is basically a virtual, digital currency. Right now, 1 Bitcoin is worth about $800 US dollars.

A few retail outlets accept it as legitimate currency (including Overstock.com), but not a lot of travel providers. However, that’s starting to change. The website PointsHound, which gets you points and miles when you book a hotel, is offering Bitcoin as a reward option. The amount that you receive depends on a lot of factors, including which hotel you book.

Even Vegas is taking a gamble on Bitcoin. The D Las Vegas and Golden Gate Hotel & Casino are accepting the virtual currency at their front desks, dining, and gift shop. Hey, if you’re really up for an adventure, Virgin Galactic is accepting Bitcoin for space travel.

But, not everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, and for good reason. This is new territory, and we’ve already seen a bubble burst once on this currency. But it’s definitely worth watching!
