Iceland - Northern Llights over mountains (2)

Iceland has been on my list for a long time. In 2008, Iceland’s stock market plunged 90 percent…which was a boon for travelers who couldn’t afford to go there before.

And if you’re going to go, you definitely want to do it this year: NASA has predicted that December of 2014 will be the best year for viewing the Northern Lights in 11 years. As we reach the end of the cycle, the lights will be stronger than ever.

It’s not just the Northern Lights. Reykjavik is an incredibly cool city, with innovative cuisine (not just rotten whale meat!) and nightlife that goes well into the morning hours. People come for wellness treatments and thermal pools, as well as everything from adventure activities like horse trekking and volcano hiking, to innovative cuisine and thriving nightlife.

Best of all, Iceland is much easier to get to than most people realize. It’s less than a 5-hour flight from the East Coast, so it’s even becoming a long-weekend getaway for Americans. Icelandair has packages that offer great deals including airfare, hotel and sightseeing. And, last, but not least, Iceland Air also has a great deal where you can fly from the U.S. to Europe and get a free stopover in Reykjavik for a few days—two trips in one!
