United Airways

United Airways’ Mileage Plus Program offers two types of award ticket options. The Saver Award is more easy on the air-miles pocketbook, but is capacity-controlled and may not be available on certain flights where demand is high. However, just as with American Airlines’ off-peak MileSAAVer option, you might be able to save more miles with the Saver Award than the Standard if you are flexible in choosing flight dates. Also, you can use the Saver Award to book flights on all partner airlines (i.e. Star Alliance network airlines), in addition to United.

The Standard Award offers expanded availability on flights, but only on flights operated  by United Airlines, United Express, and Copa Airlines. Also, these flights tend to be more expensive to compensate for the ready availability of last-minute seats. The good news, though, is that MileagePlus Premier members and MileagePlus credit cardholders always have access to last-seat availability on Standard Awards, even during high travel season.

As with American Airline ticket awards, United awards are one-way, giving you the option of combining different award types and classes of service to create a round-trip travel itinerary that best suits your needs. Take a look at United Airways’ interactive travel destinations award chart, where you can select your origin and destination and see the MileagePlus award options for your trip.

Also, as a Star Alliance network airline, United Airlines allows you to book a flight across any one of the Star Alliance network’s 24 airlines (which translates to 1,000 travel possibilities around the world) as soon as you collect enough Star Alliance Air Travel Award points. This gives you the flexibility of booking a one-way flight with one airline, then flying back with another, depending on where you want to go. In either case, you can use your United MileagePlus air miles to book a flight with any Star Alliance airline. While American Airlines’ off-peak MileSAAver makes it easier to fly to some on-demand destinations during the low-travel season, United Airlines offers more destination and airline flight combination options.
