8. Turpentine Festival
And under the category of “you can’t make this stuff up,” there’s the Turpentine Festival in Portal, Georgia—about an hour outside of Savannah—where you’ll find one of the last remaining turpentine stills in the country. You can see a firsthand demonstration of how turpentine is made, while you learn about the importance it holds in the local community. Celebrations kick off with a parade through downtown Portal, after which activity is centralized at the festival grounds. There are booths selling locally made turpentine and other handcrafted items, food options featuring the unique and local “rosin-baked” potatoes, and carnival ride and games.
