Window Seat or Aisle Seat: World’s Best Places for Water Sports

Locations in this article:  Anchorage, AK Cape Town, South Africa

Spring is time to jump back into the water and engage in some fun ocean sports. Window Seat or Aisle Seat blogger, family travel expert and single mom Kerri Zane shares the best destinations around the world for surfing, diving, kitesurfing, snorkeling, and windsurfing.

My daughters and I are lucky to live in Southern California near one of the best ocean sport destinations in the world, Huntington Beach, aka Surf City, USA. We’re spoiled, for sure. Despite having the ideal beach venue right in our backyard sometimes we still feel the need to mix things up. So this month we’re venturing out to explore the hidden gems of water sport destinations worldwide.

Surfing

Busua, Ghana

For the real adventurous Busua, in the western region of Ghana, has some of the best undiscovered waves in the world. Remember the 1967 movie Endless Summer? That is what Ghana’s beaches look like today with the added bonus of warm water all year round. Accommodations vary. I suggest you try Fanta’s Folly, a beautiful hand-crafted ecolodge, very colorful and rustic. Or check into a treehouse or bungalow at The Hideout. While in Busua take a day trip to Dixcove or Butre. Each is a small fishing community with 17th century Dutch historical sites. Take a guided tour through the rain forest, a canoe trip to Abokwa Island, try your hand at traditional farming or simply skateboard, kayak or snorkel. Contact Green Bug Adventures to arrange your family surf tour. You might even want to combine it with a volunteer day or safari.

Sagres, Portugal

Sagres is the up-and-coming European surf destination. There are 22 beaches within a 30-minute drive, where you and your kids will find amazing Atlantic rollers. With south and west-facing coastline it provides fine surf conditions the whole year round for all surfer levels regardless of the swell and wind direction. Some of the best beaches for beginners are Castelejo, Amado, Carrapateira and Arrifana. More experienced surfers should try Ponta Ruiva, Cordoama and Vale Figueiras.

The best spot to stay with your family is Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel. Accommodation options range from 5-star hotel rooms to a selection of spacious family houses. In addition to surfing your family can luxuriate in any one of the 5 swimming pools, crèche and kids club, spa, gym, three restaurants all with children play areas, one family surf bar and village shops.
