Travel Tip: Art Anniversaries

Locations in this article:  Los Angeles, CA Philadelphia, PA Vienna, Austria

With so many museums out there, it’s hard to know where to start. So why not pick a couple of special occasions and go from there?

This year marks the 150th birthday of Viennese artist Gustav Klimt. We’re in the last few weeks of the exhibit at the J. Paul Getty museum in Los Angeles—what’s cool about this one is that it focuses entirely on his collection of drawings. But in Vienna, the Klimt exhibit goes on until January, where you can check out the world’s most comprehensive collection of his paintings at the Belvedere.

Ever heard of the Sackler Gallery in Washington, DC? It’s part of the Smithsonian Institution, but it’s one that most tourists completely overlook. It’s celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with a series of Asian art—we’re talking works from India, Iran, China, and Iraq. The big highlight is in November with a collection of artifacts that were only recently uncovered in the Arabian Peninsula.

And in Philadelphia, there’s a museum that—again—no one even knows about! It’s the Academy of Natural Science, the oldest museum of its kind in America that’s celebrating its 200th anniversary. They’re celebrating with a special exhibit of its natural history collection, plus scientist-led discussions on sustainability and the environment.
