Doug Johnson wrote on Facebook:We’re going to be traveling abroad; what are a couple of website I could look up for travelers insurance for both an adult and child? I’ve never purchased this kind of insurance before and would appreciate your experience.

Peter replied: Insuremytrip and Squaremouth both sell insurance, but they also have excellent side-by-side comparisons on actual policy language. The website show what is really included in these policies and what is, more importantly, excluded.

Remember, there are different kinds of insurance: There is trip cancellation and interruption insurance, which you should take out if you have a sizable investment—over $1,000. You never buy cancellation or interruption insurance from the travel provider themselves because the language there benefits the company. Buy your insurance from a third party like Travel Guard, Allianz, or C & A Insurance.

When it comes to insurance, you also need to consider medical evacuation and repatriation insurance, especially if you’re traveling with kids. I recommend MedjetAssist because they have a family policy. It’s not per trip, it’s per year. It costs about $300 or so, but if you get sick or injured anywhere in the word, the company will get you stabilized and transported back to the US to the doctor and medical facility of your choice. There are a lot of companies out there offering medical evacuation insurance, but it’s for the facility and doctor of their choice. I don’t want to be the victim of the lowest bidder. I want to go to where my doctor recommends.
