Olympic Travel Takeaway: Introducing the Olympic Traveler Profile

Locations in this article:  London, England

Prior to the start of the 2012 Olympic Games, the Travel Detective crunched the numbers. Turns out that when hosting the Olympics a country stands to lose more than it will gain. And far from turning around a city or country’s economy, the Olympics instead create a market of dramatic fluctuations in travel price.

So while the Olympics might not be as profitable as one might expect for a host country, is the once-in-a-lifetime experience of the Games worth the expense? At home or across the pond, what lessons should you take away from the London 2012 Olympic Games?

This question will be at the center of our Olympics Travel Takeaway Contest. Starting this Thursday through the end of the Games, we’ll be posting a different question to test your travel knowledge and skills. The winners will take home gold, silver and bronze Visa gift cards.

Want a leg up on the competition? Take a look at the date in the infograph below.
