Travel Tip: Celebrity Trees

Locations in this article:  Athens, Greece

You’ve heard of eco-tourism. Some people like to focus on nature tourism. There’s even botanical tourism. But have you ever heard of a celebrity tree? No, I’m not kidding!

Let’s start with something called a Circus tree. These living sculptures are made from sycamore trees that have been grafted together to form unusual designs, and you can find a whole collection of them at Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy, California.

And while you often hear about trees being cut down to make way for development, that won’t happen to a particular tree in Athens, Georgia. This one is known as the Tree That Owns Itself. You heard me right. The public has generally accepted that this tree has been emancipated since 1890.

Ever heard of a moon tree? No, they’re not exactly from outer space, but pretty close. These are trees that were born from seeds that orbited the moon on Apollo 14, and today they’re scattered all throughout the U.S.

Not all of the locations are known, but you can spot some at the Birmingham Botanical Garden and the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
