Travel Tip: Wi-Fi in the Sky

I admit to being one of those Type A folks who need connectivity. No, I’m not one of those guys who wants to make phone calls in the air. I’m talking about Wi-Fi in the sky.

If you’re like me, then you really don’t change your lifestyle when you change your location….even when you’re at 35,000 feet.

I never used to fly during the day, because I needed to be available during business hours. Now, I always fly during the day, and I base my flights on which airlines—and in particular which planes—have Internet access.

The good news is this kind of connectivity is becoming increasingly available: Delta has it on almost its entire fleet; American has it on 300 of its planes; Virgin American is entirely connected; and United has it on transcontinental flights.

I bought a monthly Wi-Fi pass from GoGo. It’s about $35, and when you consider that’s how much some hotels charge a day, it’s more than a bargain—it’s an essential.

And it’s not just about work. It’s also about watching streaming videos, and tracking our flights. Bottom line: cell phones on planes – please, not in my lifetime. But Wi-Fi? I actually wrote this on the flight!
