Travel Tip: Summer Student Travel

Locations in this article:  New Orleans, LA

With summer approaching, students are ready to get out of classroom. But summertime doesn’t mean the learning is over.

National Geographic Adventures has several types of student programs that incorporate education. There are expeditions programs that involve intrepid journeys to places like Alaska and Ecuador; field workshops where they can learn a skill from the pros, like photography and archeology.

And then there’s my favorite type: community service, where they actually get to work with the locals and help make a difference. If that’s intriguing look into Habitat for Humanity’s Global Villages, where teens can help build homes in communities around the world.

Have a younger child who wants to travel? Check out youth leadership programs like People to People, which organize conferences for children in 5th grade and up, everywhere from  Washington D.C. to New Orleans.

And how traveling to…Minnesota? That’s right, Concordia Language Villages has language immersion programs for students and families, covering everything from Arabic to Swedish, from 5 days to a full month.

Before you book a youth trip, make sure to ask about discounts. Many offer scholarships, and some companies give discounts to children of school employees.
