Ask Peter: Smoke-Free Vacations, Choosing a Cruise & More

Robert Ford in Lehigh Acres Florida asked “What would be your preferred cruise line Oceania or Regent?”

Peter replied: I actually like them both. Oceania has not been on a lot of people’s radar because it’s a smaller line, as is Regent by the way. Oceania is relatively new, but it’s doing a great job.

Both of those cruise lines are equally excellent and you don’t normally hear me say that. Choose by the itinerary and not by the size of the cabin or the price of the cruise. You need to figure out the itinerary that works for you that has the least amount of schlepping and the most amounts of ports you might normally not go to. Both Oceania and Regent will go to a lot of port cities that the bigger cruise lines won’t go and that’s their real attraction for me. When you get to go into the smaller ports you can have those really genuine local experience.

Carmella in Louisiana tweeted, “My 16-year-old daughter is going to Italy, Rome, Venice and at a CC during spring break. Any tips?”

If she’s going to Venice, she probably wants to take a gondola ride. That’s like a horse and carriage ride in Central Park. It’s expensive. They rip you off. Don’t do it. Instead tell her to go to Piazzale Roma and get on Vaporetto #1, which is essentially the Madison Ave bus. Hop on it and you’ll see all of Venice. As for day trips every one always mentions going to Pisa. Here’s a news bulletin, there’s a building there and it leans–pass on this. Instead go to Lucca. Lucca has the antique market, where you can shop for real souvenirs.
