Travel Tip: Remembering the Titanic

This year marks the anniversary of one of the biggest travel disasters in history. I’m talking about the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

So how are some people remembering this date? By sailing on a memorial cruise! You can’t make this stuff up. The Titanic Anniversary Cruise by Azmara will depart New York on April 10, exactly 100 years after the original ship set sail from Southampton, England. There will be onboard educational programming and a memorial ceremony on the anniversary.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, was the closest port to the sinking, and recovered bodies were sent there for identification and burial. Today, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is home to pieces of wreckage and is hosting lectures and exhibits related to the Titanic.

And if you really want to go over the top, Kensington Tours has a 15-day experience where you can actually dive down to the wreck.

You will cruise from St. John’s, Newfoundland, and get on a submarine to journey more than 12,000 feet under the sea. The cost? About $60,000. But if you don’t get on the submarine, it’s only about $12,000.  And no, Leo DiCaprio doesn’t come with the price.

A recent cruise disaster has spurred many comparisons to the infamous Titanic disaster.  Find out more about the Costa Concordia ship sinking from earlier this year.
