This week Peter offers advice on travel safety in India and Ghana, using frequent-flier miles for seat upgrades, airport changes and vetting tour companies.

Jen in Seattle asked: I’m going to India in a few weeks. Do you have advice for me as an American traveler? Things I should look out for or be careful of? I’m a very tall woman and I’m going with two other men. I feel I’ll be safe, but what do you think?

Peter replied: I love India. You didn’t tell me where you’re going, but I hope you get out to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Rajasthan of course. There are many great things to do and the food is unbelievable.

As to travel safety, height has nothing to do with it; it has to do with common sense. You’re traveling with two other men―even if you were traveling alone I would tell you, you have nothing to worry about. I have never had a problem there and I have never known one of my fellow women travelers to have a problem there. The only thing I would be careful about is the water. Hotels like the Taj and the Oberoi have their own filtration systems and chemical testing systems. The water purification in those hotels is excellent and you can drink the bottled water there. But people make mistakes when they brush their teeth. Bush your teeth with bottled water too. And if you’re at a restaurant don’t use ice. Follow my advice and you’re going to have a great time.
