Travel Tip: Cruise Safety Tips

In the wake of the Concordia disaster, you might be worried about sailing on the high seas.  But take note, there are some basic safety precautions you can take that will really protect yourself.

Under an international covenant  called Safety of Life at Sea or SOLAS, cruise lines are required to hold a mustard drill within 24 hours of leaving their first port of embarkation, but in the wake of the Concordia, I’ll make you a bet, it will now happen before the ship even leaves the dock.

And no matter how tempting it is, when they have that lifeboat drill, don’t hide out in your cabin.  Attendance is mandatory and it can save your life.

And no matter what size of the ship, find out all locations of personal flotation devices because if there’s an emergency and you’re in your cabin, grab your life preserver and head to the deck.

But if you’re not in the cabin, the last thing you want to do is go back to your cabin.  Head for the highest deck of the ship where they have additional life preservers and that’s where you want to be.
