New Cruise Safety Rules: A CBS This Morning Report

As rescue crews are starting to uncover the cameras from the Costa Concordia, cruise companies are beginning to reevaluate their safety regulations. Though it could take months to reach international agreement for changes to Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), most cruise companies are preemptively rethinking the timing of the muster drill. This crucial safety drill will now happen prior to a ship leaving the port.

In addition to the muster drill, the language barrier between staff and passengers is now taking center stage. Cruises companies like to boost about the diversity of their staff, but, in the event of a tragedy, fatal communication errors could take place.

Beyond cruise protocol changes, passengers should know what to do in the event of an incident. Instead of returning to the stateroom for a life jacket. Head to the top of the ship where you’ll be in the safest position.
