Video Travel Tip: Bargaining at the Egyptian Markets

Once you get passed the dreaded “f-word” (I mean fear, people)  and take my advice on traveling to Egypt, you will be amazed by the number of street markets filled with vendors hawking their goods.

In a country that relies heavily on tourism, vendors struggle when visitorship is down  — and it’s down,  from 14 million in 2010 to 4 million in 2011, in fact.

That said, don’t be afraid to hone your haggling skills to get the best deal. Bargaining is a way of life in Egypt and vendors will upsell in anticipation of a buyer bargaining down the original price.  There are many ways to bargain, but credits card will become your best offense in  this money game.

Check out the video below for the best way to negotiate your way down on items you won’t find anywhere else.

And if you’re friends think you’re crazy for going, look at it this way: Pack some common sense, be willing to immerse yourself in the culture, and then realize that you’d be crazy for NOT going.
