Travel Tip: New Social Networking Technology

If your only exposure to social networking is posting pictures to Facebook, listen up. There’s a whole world of social-networking tools that can help make or break your travel experience.

One tool is called Trippy, which connects to Facebook so you can enlist your friends to help plan the trip. You post where you’re headed–or simply where you want to go–and your friends can suggest activities and experiences.

Want to see the Rockefeller Center tree or go ice skating in Central Park when there’s a lull in the crowds? A new website called GoCrowdless.com uses data from the social network Foursquare to help predict when main attractions will be least crowded.

If you’re buying plane tickets, check out Hipmunk.com which has an interesting twist. Like most other search engines, you can sort potential flights by price, time, duration, and number of stops.

Or you can sort flights by a combination of those factors–which you do by clicking the “agony” button. After all, you want to minimize the agony on your trip, and to do that, you need all the information at your fingertips.
