Ask the Locals: Birmingham, Alabama with Ty Taylor of Pinches Tacos

Locations in this article:  Atlanta, GA Austin, TX Los Angeles, CA

Most Birmingham residents share two all-consuming passions: the love of football and the love of food (really, really good food). Both shine, but it’s the restaurant scene that sets the city apart. Travel Correspondent Jordan Whitley talked to local restaurant owner Ty Taylor about his new endeavor – Mexican dishes with a Southern twist.

Birmingham’s best restaurants are tucked neatly throughout the many villages that give the area a small town feel in its big city package. From high end Mountain Brook, historic Highlands, eclectic Forest Park and edgy post-industrial downtown, every area has a culinary gem.

As for the cozy corner of Homewood, its newest star is Pinches Tacos, mixing South of the Border taste with the kind of warm hospitality only Southerners can provide. And since it’s all about knowing where to look in this city, we enlisted Pinches proprietor Ty Taylor to help navigate the savory waters of the Magic City.

Describe your perfect weekend.
That would be anything that gets me outdoors. Birmingham stays pretty warm throughout the year, so there’s always something going on outside. Football is really important to just about anyone in Alabama, so during the fall months weekends typically revolve around the football schedule.

Note: some of the area’s top outdoor options include canoeing/tubing down the Cahaba River, hiking or horseback riding at Oak Mountain, or taking in 18 holes at the Highland Golf Course near downtown.
