It’s been a week of emergencies with a plane skidding off a runway, a terminal on fire, and an oxygen mask incident. And with flight attendants undressing rather than cross checking, travel failures come naturally. See this week’s Icarus nominees and vote for the worst offender in the poll below.

Tell Peter about your Icarus stories in the comments. Find another travel failure and you’ll win an exclusive Peter Greenberg prize.

Jesse “Don’t Touch My Body” Ventura

Former wrestler and Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura had a federal judge in St. Paul, Minnesota, dismiss his lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration. Ventura had contended that the pat-downs violated his rights, specifically his right to avoid unreasonable search and seizure. Ventura had a titanium hip placed in his body in 2008, which sets off metal detectors and caused him to be subjected to a body pat-down last November.

No Mask for You

Passengers are going to the press after an incident on Frontier Flight 787 on October 14. An issue with the plane’s computer caused a problem in air pressurization. Oxygen masks were deployed automatically, however several masks failed to drop and others were not working properly. A Frontier spokesperson has said that all the masks did drop and function property, but passengers are releasing statements and videos to contradict the airline’s claim.

The Girls of Ryanair

Every week, it seems Ryanair finds a way to score an Icarus nomination. From duct taping windows to removing some lavatories, it’s hard to find a popular decision that the airline makes. But come Christmas, the airline may win back fliers with its unique “Girls of Ryanair” calendar. This is the fourth year that the airline has produced pinup calendar for charity. Thirteen members of its cabin crew were photographed in their skivvies to raise money to send 50 families whose children suffer from a debilitating skin condition to a specially equipped holiday property in Malaga, Spain.

Bad Batteries

The FBI investigated an explosion at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport earlier this week, which injured the arm and possibly the face of a United Airlines’ baggage handler. Classified as a Level 1 hazmat situation, which is a minimal-to-moderate risk to public heath, the incident occurred after a large package fell to the ground and a battery inside exploded. Initial reports suggest that criminal activity is not suspected.

Airport Slip N’ Slide

Yesterday a Singapore Airlines flight slid off the runway in Munich airpot. Just after touchdown the plane slid from the runway to the grass. Local firefighters arrived at the scene to assist the passengers in evacuating the plane and confirmed that neither the passengers nor the plane sustained any great damage. One of the airports two runways will remain shut until the plane is removed, which looks like it will result in significant delays and some flight cancellations at Germany’s second-largest hub.
