Travel Tip: Flash Sales

First it was group-buying sites and private membership sites.

Now there’s something called “flash sales” sites.

So what’s this latest trend all about?

A flash sale relies on the old “limited-time-offer” gimmick. That’s not to say there aren’t some great deals out there, but here’s how to make it work for you.

Be flexible: Instead of choosing a destination and looking for deals, pick your destination based on the deal. Watch out for blackout and expiration dates.

The site Yuupon.com provides vouchers which has to be redeemed by a certain date.

The good news? They can be canceled for as long as they’re still valid.

Which brings me to the next point: Always check the cancellation policy.

The site Spire.com allows cancellations within 72 hours, but charges $29 per reservation.

Meanwhile, Priceline’s Last-Minute Pricebreakers policies vary: Airline tickets tend to be non-refundable but may be reissued for a fee, while hotel deals may not allow cancellations at all.

Last, but not least, find out if what you’re seeing really is a good deal…by picking up the phone and asking the travel provider directly!

Our own Travel Deals section doesn’t rely on gimmicks.
