Travel Tip: Fall Driving

It’s a no-brainer to be extra careful when driving in winter, but there are also some things you need to watch out for as autumn approaches.

Falling leaves make for great scenery, but they can also cover up potholes, curbs, and street markings. When those leaves are wet, it can affect steering and braking. Go slow and pay attention.

The heat of summer can deteriorate windshield wipers, so get those checked out before the first rain hits.

Remember that icy spots can arise on bridges, overpasses and shady areas, even if regular roads are perfectly dry.

And here’s one I bet you’re familiar with: You start driving when it’s light out, and forget to turn on your lights as the sun goes down.

This is the time when days get shorter before you even realize it. This is also the time of year that kids are walking to and from school, and wildlife is more present around roadways.

Bottom line: It may be a beautiful time of year to be driving, but take into account the conditions that come with the autumn season.
