Hidden Gems: Waka & Waiheke Island, New Zealand

Locations in this article:  Auckland, New Zealand

Every trip to New Zealand is a voyage of discovery, and one of the most interesting things to discover just might be the country’s past.

You can take to the waters and ride on a Waka, a double-hulled, ocean-going canoe. They are thought to be how Polynesian settlers migrated to New Zealand. Waka building was a lost art until a new generation of boaters begin to resurrect this sailing tradition.

On dry land, you can help replant native flora and fauna on Motuihe Island. Or you can explore traditional crafts in Apex studio, within an artisan community on Waiheke Island, where you can make your own souvenir.

Watch Peter go native in Hidden Gems: Waka and Waiheke Island, New Zealand, and remember to come back next week for the full Hidden Gems: New Zealand video.
