Travel Tip: Local History Museums

Locations in this article:  Atlanta, GA Tampa, FL

Usually when you travel, it’s the big-name museums that get the attention.

But don’t overlook the value of those local history museums, which can be a great jumping-off point for exploring a destination.

The Atlanta History Center features everything from Civil War artifacts to an Olympic Games Museum. It’s all one complex so one ticket gets you access to all of this local history.

The Oklahoma Museum of History is actually affiliated with the Smithsonian, and this is a real state-of-the-art facility.

We’re talking five galleries covering topics you probably never knew about, like a retrospective on the Okie cartoonist who created Dick Tracy and the role of Latino culture in Oklahoma.

And the Tampa Bay History Center showcases landmarks and archival photographs on an interactive display, not to mention an exhibit on its extensive Native American roots and the history of the city’s famous cigar industry.

Whether it’s your first time, or you’re a repeat visitor, chances are these are the kinds of  experiences that will give you a whole new perspective on a place.
