Travel Tip: Farm Stays and Agritourism

A few years ago, the term “agritourism” was a new concept to most travelers.

These days, it seems like every farm has some kind of experience for those who are interested in learning about the process.

Here’s how to go about planning an agritourism vacation.

Unfortunately, there is no real definition of terms when it comes to agritourism. Some farms take that to mean pumpkin patches and corn mazes, while others might be a B&B on a vineyard, and others are actual working farms where you can participate in the process.

Online resources like SleepintheHay.com and FarmstayUS.com are helpful resources with databases of  farms with overnight programs.

Ask what is a typical day’s schedule, workload and age requirements, as well as the sleeping and eating arrangements.

Think about your own interests: Do you really want to get your hands dirty, or do you just want to take a tour of a working farm? Make that clear with your hosts before you arrive.

Sure, you may be able to participate in crop harvesting, feeding animals, and gathering eggs, but you may have to work around their schedule, not yours.
