Active & Accessible Outdoor Adventures

If you’re dealing with mobility issues, that doesn’t mean you have to limit your outdoor adventures this summer. Check out the accessible outdoors…

The Colorado-based company Adaptive Adventures organizes a variety of outdoor activities for those with physical disabilities. We’re talking bicycling, hand cycling, river rafting, and kayaking programs.

A non-profit organization, called Outdoor Explorations, hosts adventure programs that run from one day to several nights.

That includes backpacking expeditions and ropes courses, using equipment that is adapted to individual needs.

They had a close call with funding issues, but according to their website are officially able to re-open.

And don’t forget to find out what’s available in your own backyard.

The State Park department in Massachusetts has an entire division dedicated to accessible activities, including adaptive bicycles.

Meanwhile, several ski resorts that offer adaptive winter programs also offer equipment for summer activities.

Whistler, for example, rents out TrailRiders, which is a one-wheeled vehicle that can be led through almost any rugged terrain.

And here’s an activity you may not have thought of: ATVing. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) usually require little to no modification, like installing electric shifts or back rests to provide additional support.

The lesson here is that even if you deal with physical limitations, you’re not nearly as limited as you might think when it comes to experiencing great outdoors.
