Overlooked Sites for Military History Travel

Locations in this article:  New Orleans, LA

One great way to get to know a city’s history is to visit its military sites, but the problem is, those places aren’t always on the brochures.

In New Orleans, sure, you’ll hear all about the French Quarter.

But in the old warehouse district, there’s a world-class National World War II museum that chronicles the events of the war and the city’s crucial role in it.

In Washington, DC, of course there’s the Air and Space Museum, but you can also visit the National Museum of Jewish American Military History, and the Korean War Veterans Memorial, among others.

So how can you find these great historic sites if they’re not necessarily in the brochures?

Check out resources like Military.com, which has a comprehensive guide to museums and memorials all around the country.

The National Archives offers resources to presidential libraries, Military Historical Organizations, and memorial sites.

Or you can even check in with your local veterans communities.

They can often point you toward sites in your own backyard, which you may have never known about otherwise.
