Accessible Trains

If you have mobility issues and want to travel the U.S. by train, there are things that you should know before you go.

The fact is, all Amtrak trains have accessible seats near the front of each car, which have more legroom than traditional seats.

However, these seats can’t be reserved. Anyone can sit there.

If you prefer to remain in your wheelchair, you can reserve a space to keep your chair.

But those spaces are limited, so make those arrangements ahead of time.

Overnight trains like the California Zephyr and high-demand services such as the Northeast Corridor trains are a whole different animal because all passengers are required to reserve a seat.

For better luck getting an accessible seat, start your journey at a larger station.

When you get to the station let one of the red caps know you’re there and that you need assistance.

They’ll help you pre-board and give you seating preference.

And when you’re planning any Amtrak journey, your best bet is to book over the phone rather than online, so an actual human being can give you all the help you need.
